Kevin started learning the piano at age 5, and later discovered drums and percussion in middle school. Through his high school and college years, he expanded his musical interests to include band/orchestral percussion, rock, jazz, and funk drumming, and traditional music from Ghana, Korea, and Brazil. Kevin holds a BA in music from the University of California, Davis, and a MM in music performance from California State University, Long Beach.
As a performer, Kevin has performed with the Blue Man Group, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Sambala, the Long Beach Symphony, the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, Monobloco, and has performed in 14 states with his band The Zoo Human Project. He has commissioned and premiered new music by Mika Pelo, Adriana Verdie, Alan Shockley, Ross Bauer and Kurt Rohde.
As a teacher, Kevin combines a strong emphasis on technique, theory, and fundamentals with interesting music that keeps the student excited about learning. On the piano, he immerses students in both the classical repertoire of the last 300 years and the popular music of the past and present. On the drums, he emphasizes versatility and listening to train his students to be well-rounded and sensitive musicians.
