Voice Guitar Piano Theory & Songwriting Performance & Choreography

James began his musical career in the glee club and church choir of his New England mill town home. When folk masses became popular he picked up a guitar and took the lead. In the years that followed James took roles in local variety shows, clubs, and musicals, while also studying traditional and jazz piano. This led him to enroll in the Berklee College of Music in Boston as a composition major. While there, a local publishing company signed him on as a staff writer, leading him to move into the professional world of music, and out of academia.

In 1983, James moved to California to produce, arrange, record and perform music both as a solo artist and as the leader of a vocal jazz band and quartet . In the process, he found a new passion in teaching, and has studied both piano pedagogy and vocal and choral education in pursuit of a choral education degree at CSUF. James has taught music around the county, including at the acclaimed Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA).

James first became hooked on performing when his mother encouraged him to sing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" over the phone to her friends. He's encouraged the same love of music in his son, whose band, "Parade of Lights," was recently signed to the Astralwerks label.
